I am Marloes Berkers, an enthusiastic freelance learning expert. For me the following question is essential: how do I motivate someone to learn?
From my educational background, I have progressively evolved in various types of learning solutions, ranging from e-learning modules to interactive workshops and training sessions. In recent years, serious games have increasingly caught my attention. I believe the strength in these games lies in making learning fun and engaging again, thereby achieving the greatest learning impact.
The math miracle
There I am, locked in an escape room. My friend is diligently working on a difficult math problem. She consistently received failing grades in high school for mathematics and disliked it a lot. Now, she doesn’t hesitate for a moment. She immerses herself in this math problem to solve the puzzle
My mission
Make learning fun again!
I wish I had the options for different ways of learning back in the day. I valued education highly but experienced a lot of pressure in school due to fear of failure and perfectionism.
When I studied on my own, I often turned it into a game. I played the role of the teacher explaining everything to my stuffed animals, or I turned my German vocabulary list into a puzzle.
Games still help me learn. Tabletop and video games show me that it’s okay to try out new things and to make mistakes.
I wish this for everyone. I’m certainly not the only one who had a negative experience with learning in school. Employees often feel resistant to learning, especially when it’s mandated by an organization.
That’s why we need to move away from traditional learning solutions. It’s time to make learning fun again; because it’s possible!
With behavioral change
I love coming up with creative ideas. That’s why each game looks different, tailored to the needs of your organization and employees.
In addition, I continue to prioritize the learning effect. This forms the common thread and the starting point for each game. The goal is that after the game, employees will do something different (read: better) than they did before, based on what they have learned.
Curious about what suits your needs? I’d be happy to brainstorm with you!
Let's meet!
Do you want a serious game for your organization? Or advice on this?
